
Dealing with the “Cold Spot” Problem in Glass Tunnel Kilns
If you’ve ever worked with long tunnel kilns for glass art, you know the frustration of a heat profile that just… dips. You’ve got these gaps between the lamps, and that’s where the trouble starts. Those little cold spots are a nightmare. They lead to thermal shock or uneven melting, and suddenly, a piece you spent hours on is ruined. Standard IR lamps are just too short. They aren’t built for this. That’s why we build continuous infrared heating units that actually stretch past 2 meters.
Getting the length right
Here’s the thing: quartz tubes have their limits. If you just make them longer without a plan, they’ll start to sag once they hit those high temperatures. It’s a mess. To stop that, we customize the filament winding and tweak the wall thickness of the tube. We set them up end-to-end with almost no gaps. Instead of a series of hot and cold zones, you get a solid wall of heat. Your glass stays stable the entire time it’s moving through the tunnel. No surprises.
The electrical side of things
Longer lamps mean more current. It’s simple math, but it’s where a lot of people get tripped up. We spend a lot of time figuring out the voltage and wattage so the heat stays even across that whole 2-meter span. You don’t want one end scorching while the other is barely warm. Plus, if you’re running high wattage, your electrical panels need to be able to handle it. We don’t just box up a lamp and ship it to you. We calculate the total load first. It’s a lot better than finding out your breakers can’t handle the heat the hard way.
Setting them up (and keeping them running)
We use industrial-grade connectors because kilns expand and contract. If your connections are flimsy, they’ll wiggle loose. We designed these to be drop-in replacements. If a unit finally gives out, you can just swap it. You don’t have to tear the whole tunnel apart, which saves you a massive headache. One quick warning, though: these ultra-long tubes are a bit more fragile than the short ones. One wrong move during wiring and you’ve got a crack. It’s a heartbreaker. To prevent that, we use reinforced mounting brackets to take the pressure off the glass. It just makes the whole thing feel more secure.
