That’s why we stick with ceiling-mounted infrared heaters. Instead of fighting the draft, they just ignore the air entirely and warm up the people. How it actually works Think of it like the sun. You can feel the sun’s heat on your skin even on a crisp winter day when the air is freezing. That’s exactly what these heaters do. They send out waves that don’t do anything until they hit something solid—like a worker’s shoulder or a metal locker. The result? You feel the warmth the second you step under the unit. No waiting for the room to “warm up.” Getting the setup right If you’ve got high ceilings, you’ll want shortwave or medium-wave emitters. We usually go with shortwave for changing areas. They hit hard and fast, which is perfect for a spot where people are only hanging out for a few minutes to swap their boots. But here’s the catch: you have to get the wattage and the height right. If you mount a weak unit too high, you’ll end up with a “cold spot” right where people are standing. We always double-check the square footage and ceiling height first so you aren’t left under-powered. A few things to keep in mind You’ll need a dedicated circuit for the wiring. These units pull a decent amount of current the moment they kick on, so you don’t want them sharing a line with everything else. Also, keep in mind that this is “directional” heat. If you’re standing in the beam, you’re toasted. If you step two feet to the left? You’re back in the cold. One last tip: watch out for the glare.
